YORK MASH-UP AT THE
GLADSTONE , Gladstone Ballroom (1214 Queen St. West).

under $10.
In 1984 Anne
Lederman and Ian Bell created a
unique recording of 19th century Ontario grassroots
music for the 20th century. Now, we invite you to
celebrate the re-release of that recording for the
21st, on CD for the first time. On November 17, at
the Gladstone, they are inviting both musicians
from the original recording and new musical friends
from many places to "have a go" at the old music.
A Scottish
strathspey on Carnatic violin? A bit of snare drum
and cahon? Bagpipes and kalimba? Why not? Old
Ontario folk music meets the new Ontario, a place
that musicians from all over the world call home.
Through the miracles of modern (1980s) technology,
Anne and Ian did most of the original recording
themselves on fiddles, guitars, mandolins, hammered
dulcimer, smallpipes, piano, bass and voices.
They will take
to the stage with Pat
O'Gorman (Rare Air) on bagpipes, flutes and
whistles, Jeff Bird (Tamarack, Cowboy Junkies) on bass, Tom
Leighton (Haines and Leighton) on piano and accordion, Subhadra
Vijaykumar on Carnatic violin (from south India) composer and
percussionist Debashis Sinha, Daryl
Williams (North York Steel Band) on pan, Laura
Smith, and
other surprise musical guests.Think Ontario has no
folk music? Join us in the ballroom of the historic
Gladstone Hotel in downtown Muddy York as the past
meets the future. INFO:

Sing
7 at
Eaglewood,
Pfferlaw,
Ont with Tom
Leighton and
Carol
Hasek.. This
excellent choral weekend is organized by
Margaret
Almack It's
very informal with lots of singing. You don't HAVE
to have choral experience to enjoy yourself.
Singing always makes you feel good and doing it
with like minded people makes you feel even
better!! Last years master classes with Carol were
a BIG hit. They're sort of like eave dropping on a
specific music lesson. That really puts the
"theory" into a more relevant context. We perform a
VERY informal concert followed by an open stage -
mostly for ourselves though we make a CD which
sounds pretty damn good considering the amount of
practice time! Also there are some of Tom's chorale
arrangements written JUST for us. Anyone who have
been to the grounds at Eaglewood will remember how
beautiful the site is, aaaaand it's still too
early for bugs!! Here is Margeret's address for
